Euforquestra and Chicago Afrobeat Project at Majestic Theatre
Fort Collins, Colorado, funk fusionists Euforquestra whip up self-described “Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk” jams that shine in an improvisation-friendly live setting. Maybe that’s why the band gave away its third album, Soup, online last year, but it’s more likely that the intensively touring band is staying true to its always-eager-to-please-fans attitude. The non-stop dance-a-thon will kick off with Chicago Afrobeat Project, bringing seven to 14 members to the stage at any given time, fusing brash percussion, guitar, and brass modeled on the blend of African music, funk, jazz, and psychedelia that Fela Kuti began pioneering in the ’70s. Euforquestra may not share in Kuti’s ranting anger, but the music and leftist attitude make for an assertive groove all the same.
