The Fiery Furnaces, Cryptacize, and Dent May And His Magnificent Ukulele at Majestic Theatre
Like a perfectly logical sentence re-typed in Wingdings font, The Fiery Furnaces' songs turn familiar parts into an alien whole by sheer force of whimsical will. Eleanor Friedberger sings with both the seductive melodic sense of a bluesy pop singer and the maddening rhythm of compulsive chatter, while her brother Matthew junk-piles on piano, electronics, loops, and much more. In the duo's best moments, good hooks and a pointed bursts of dissonance become one. The Furnaces' mutually abusive relationship with their pop inspirations settles down a little bit on the new I'm Going Away, but they're still as wrapped up in their own bizarre musical language as ever.
