Fishtank Ensemble and Luminescent Orchestrii at High Noon Saloon

Los Angeles band Fishtank Ensemble's flamenco-gypsy acoustic guitar, dual fiddles, and temptingly tight rhythms summon up the nimble melodies of Eastern European and Middle Eastern Europe in bursts of song that feel like exotic, brash come-ons in some Bucharest alleyway. This works well enough on the many instrumental tracks on the band's latest album, Samurai Over Serbia, but comes together more richly when fiddler and saw player Ursula Knudson steps up to sing—in Romanian, French, Japanese, and other languages. New Yorkers Luminescent Orchestrii boast similar instrumentation and influences, but add the gritty rhythmic attack of punk and flirt with slightly more unstable sonic tweaks in a way that evokes a love for underground experimentation (and in the case of the song "Nasty Tasty," sexed-up hip-hop).
