    Flatbear at The Frequency

Jentri Colello recently started billing herself and her band as Flatbear, presenting the music as more of a group effort than just a good local singer-songwriter with backing musicians. Colello's songs and glum, elegant, holding-something-back vocal style are the heart of Flatbear's first full-length album, Flying Days, but her bandmates resourcefully craft a distinctive sound. For the most part, Flatbear's good at making do with the basics, crafting an eerie, dynamic environment for Colello's lyrics with subdued electric guitars, piano, and restless rhythm section on "Sea Of Monsters" and "Jetskis." But Flying Days also tries out some more elaborate arrangements, bringing in strings on the aforementioned "Jetskis" and layering "Flying Days" with a clatter of horns and clarinet.
