event The Flying Dutchman
-
Fri Apr 9
8 pm
The Flying Dutchman at Overture Center for the Arts - Overture Hall
In the final production of its season, Madison Opera takes on one of Richard Wagner’s most famous works, The Flying Dutchman, which was inspired by his own experiences sailing the high seas. The show revolves around a sea captain named Daland who takes an oath overheard by the devil, who in turn dooms Daland to sail aimlessly until the end of days. That is, unless, he can find a woman during the time he’s allowed shore leave (once every seven years) to love him for all eternity—no small task for a smelly, seafaring chap. An “Opera Up Close” preview event will be held on Sunday, March 28 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., as well as pre-show talks with Madison Opera general director Allan Naplan prior to each of the two performances.
