Galactic, Cyril Neville, Corey Henry, and T-Bird And The Breaks at Majestic Theatre
Galactic seems to revel in knowing that funk and the myriad sounds associated with the band's New Orleans hometown—just like all other genres—boast complicated and messy histories that too often get standardized out of the mix. Hip-hop, fuzzed-up synths, and a tasteful measure of chaos sound as essential to the band as second-line brass attacks and the unshakable grooves of drummer Stanton Moore. Collaboration has a lot to do with it: 2007's From The Corner To The Block paired the band with a bunch of different rappers (from Boots Riley to Juvenile), and the new Ya-Ka-May recruits legends like Allen Toussaint but also younger artists from New Orleans' "bounce" scene to aid in 15 acts of expert, eclectic deconstruction. Speaking of collaboration, Cyril Neville (one of New Orleans' distinguished Neville Brothers) and younger trombone player Corey Henry join Galactic for this show.
