The German Art Students at High Noon Saloon
The German Art Students' guitar-pop constantly tilts toward a realm of goofy distractions. The Madison band's signature is somehow writing bouncy, tight lyrics about all manner of odd characters and predicaments (for example, "Disgruntled Figure-Skating Judge" and "MENSA Girl"), and backing them up with well-crafted, jolly hooks that skip along on male-female vocal harmonies and snappy snare drum. Bassist-vocalist Andy Larson recently decided to leave the band after a 12-year run (this will be his last show in the lineup), but GAS plans to go on as a three-piece. The band's most recent release is the 2008 7-inch vinyl single 79 AD, which boasts one of its catchiest songs yet, "Pompeii."
