Gladys Knight at Overture Center for the Arts - Overture Hall
The public doesn't give out informal royal titles for every two-bit entertainer, and venerable R&B singer Gladys Knight, a.k.a. the "Empress Of Soul," has surely governed the empire well during her 50-year-plus career. After forming The Pips with members of her family in the '50s, Knight scored a series of hits in the '60s and '70s, indelible soul classics like their version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Midnight Train To Georgia." Knight's ability to adapt to everything from funky scorchers to grandiose ballads helped keep the diva churning out singles until the late '80s, when she and The Pips split. Lately, the soul legend has turned to gospel with 2005's One Voice, recorded with a Mormon choir, and then to jazz-pop with 2006's Before Me, a mellow, modest collection of traditional standards.
