High On Fire, Priestess, Black Cobra, and Bison at High Noon Saloon
High On Fire formed in 1998, its reputation preceded by frontman Matt Pike’s earlier band, the legendarily heavy Sleep. But it wasn’t until 2005’s Blessed Black Wings that High On Fire really began to break out into wider circles. (Enlisting Steve Albini as a producer tends to do that.) Dominated by Pike’s mammoth riffs, the album charged hard and fast, a hefty bludgeon of sludgy thrash and straightforward metal. The band followed with the equally punishing Death Is This Communion in 2007, and although its popularity seems to have plateaued since then, the new Snakes For The Divine should please longtime fans. Snakes is pummeling and brutish while maintaining a crisp, technical dexterity that is quintessentially Pike.
