Honor Among Thieves is a dazzling and slippery fish of a band, ready to fin-slice the hand of anyone who'd try to classify it. The Madison outfit's been running since 1982, developing a sound that's too funky and volatile to fit in with straightforward rock 'n' roll, usually too tense and itchy to chill alongside the jam bands, and more raging and poetic than most of local music's youngsters. Randal Harrison's violin and Andy Ewen's guitar reel through fiery leads that take in everything from blues to jazz to klezmer, and Ewen rants like a severely pissed-off hippie, complementing the heft of Joey B. Banks' drums and Doug DeRosa's bubbling, popping bass.
