Judging from its trailer, the Michael Bay-produced remake of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare On Elm Streetwill be a virtually shot-for-shot graft, which only serves to reinforce its pointlessness. After all, the Robert Englund-starring horror movie—about an undead janitor who, in the words of Will Smith, gets “burnt up like a weenie” before coming back to take his razor-fingered revenge on various horny, sleep-deprived teenagers—still delivers psychological scares aplenty. That’s particularly true of the 1984 original, before Freddy Krueger became the Henny Youngman of monsters, and Johnny Depp became too famous to die horribly.
