Icarus Himself, The Alpha Centauri, and Crane Your Swan Neck at The Frequency
Compared to the solo project's first EP back in 2007, the all-over-the-place 2009 album Coffins might not have given local project Icarus Himself the best introduction, but Nick Whetro and Karl Christensen have kept on creating and re-arranging in their live sets. Wrangling electric guitars, drum machines, trumpet, and various other gadgets and instruments, the two play and loop up an increasingly odd and tuneful landscape for Whetro's cranky but passionate songwriting. Twin Cities band The Alpha Centauri lives up to its solar-system-sized sonic aspirations on 2009's Lava Rocks, an over-the-top prog-rock epic. Whether it's favoring the electro-funk theatrics of “Electrostatic Shocks” or more ethereal space-rock on tracks like the Radiohead-indebted “With Respect To Landscapes,” The Alpha Centauri's sound is vibrant and distinctive.
