Imaginary Cities, Sexy Ester And The Pretty Mama Sisters, and Common Loon at RSR Stage
Imaginary Cities calls what it does “soaring popular music,” which is an apt description. But a more specific examination of the Winnipeg band’s newest US EP reveals hints of rolling soul on “Say You” that gives way to propulsive guitar pop near the end, a feeling that is segued nicely into “Temporary Resident,” a tune that reaches for stadium-sized emotion on the back of Marti Sarbit’s large yet inviting voice. Her slightly nasal vocals share some of the quirky charm of contemporaries like Zooey Deschanel, but the well-built pop rock constructs of Rusty Matyas assembled alongside it keep it from sliding into nostalgia and keep it planted in the present.
