Into The Woods at UW-Madison: Mitchell Theatre
University Theatre ends its season with Stephen Sondheim’s dark musical comedy, a show that won roughly a million Tony Awards in 1988. (Okay, just three, but it was nominated for 10.) The characters in Into The Woods are familiar—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, etc.—even if the situations are not. Inspired by classic fairy tales, Into The Woods sends a baker and his wife tromping through the forest in an attempt to lift a witch’s curse. Along the way they come across dead giants, Rapunzel stricken with post-partum depression, and less-than-charming princes—all of which go on to test the limits of the overused “happily ever after” curtain-closer.
