Jackson Hunt, I, Crime, Sean Lea, Fifth Suite, and Sinsuality at The Frequency
Inspired by other piano men like Billy Joel and Elton John, Jackson Hunt claims to be making good on Ben Folds' promise to bring piano back to the forefront of pop music (as if Folds himself weren’t already doing that). An obviously confident and fairly capable player, Hunt’s musical ambitions often outrun his abilities, especially his limited vocal range—which often sounds like a Folds impersonation. That plainly articulate delivery unfortunately accentuates dopey lyrics like “I’ve got a lot to say / 'Cause your eyes are like a July blue sky day” on the goofy “Tahitian Vanilla Latte,” but it also lets occasional thoughtful nuggets slip through on “Dance Dance,” which also features some inspired but sloppy keyboard plunking. Hopefully Hunt will bring more than just cockiness to his upcoming debut.
