JJO Band Camp: Mudvayne, Black Label Society, Static-X, Dope at Alliant Energy Center
Scouring this year’s installment of WJJO Band Camp for any break from formulaic, mutt-faced audio-vomit can be frustrating—it's hard to spot anything but prepackaged angst at the annual hard-rock fest. On The New Game, headlining band Mudvayne has stumbled to a level of homogenized melodrama that even its admittedly compelling rhythm section can't redeem. Bands like Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society, Static-X, and, even more so, Dope do little more than pile one nauseating, shouted rock cliché atop another with maximum predictability. Band Camp follows the radio-rock and department-store take on heavy music to the point that its dozen-plus bands seem to bleed into two at most.
