JoAnne Powers, Jennifer Pendur, And Michael Brenneis Trio at Mother Fool's Coffeehouse
Madison free-jazz sax-blaster JoAnne Powers has begun a tradition this year of marking the tilts of the Earth's axis with seasonal equinox and solstice concerts. This one, with percussionist Michael Brenneis and Jennifer Pendur, actually occurs three days before the winter solstice—a.k.a. the shortest day of the year—but instead of mourning this season of morbidly early sunsets, the three say they plan to improvise up an "incalcitrant fire" as a "challenge to the encroaching winter." In other words, don't expect the trio's feisty abrasion and free-spirited play to be watered down with the seasonal-affective blues.
