John Masino, Dr. V, and Helen Money at The Frequency
It would be utterly like Madison to have a champion shredder just modestly hanging out in our midst. Guitarist John Masino and band pop up fairly often at spots like the Club Tavern and the Badger Bowl, but the music still lives the rock-star dreams of the late '70s and '80s. Masino's a virtuosic pro whose playing exudes polish but also squeals with pinch harmonics and turbo-noodle solos, when it's not diving into thick classic-rock riffs. Appropriately, his cover choices include Hendrix songs along Joe Satriani numbers. Onstage he's compact but cocky, often playing his guitar behind his head and wedging extensive rock-out sessions into mutant versions of standards like "Born Under A Bad Sign."
