Jon Dee Graham at Kiki's House Of Righteous Music
Austin singer-guitarist Jon Dee Graham's gnarled background continues to serve him well. A veteran of Austin's music scene, he's played guitar with Alejandro Escovedo in the True Believers and has also collaborated with other alt-country luminaries, including John Doe. These songwriters' emotional range has certainly rubbed off on Graham's solo records, on which he somehow wrings both grit and tenderness from his baritone gravel pit of a voice. His latest album, the new It's Not As Bad As It Looks, nurses the massive damage a car wreck did to his body last year. Graham still isn't afraid to broadside his tuneful songs with deft, dissonant guitar runs, and he'll have plenty of chances to do that here with his band The Fighting Cocks.
