Kid Sister, Dessa, Sims, Paper Tiger, F. Stokes, and Dirty Disco Kidz at Orpheum Theatre
Of all the hip-hop artists on the Orpheum's New Year's bill, Chicagoan Kid Sister certainly had the most luck in 2009: She finally released her long-delayed album Ultraviolet, peppering its 12 tracks of driving house beats with sassy raps about the joys of house parties, buying donuts on sale, and getting your nails did. As fun as her set promises to be, the other folks on this bill might have her topped in the content department. Dessa, Sims, and Paper Tiger all hail from Minneapolis' Doomtree crew, and the finest among them might be Dessa: She's been pouring her inquisitive, incisive wordplay into a full-length (A Badly Broken Code, due out in Jan. 2010) and the literary non-fiction collection Spiral Bound. Returning yet again from his current base of Brooklyn is former Madisonian F. Stokes, with local production crew Dirty Disco Kidz backing up his streets-meet-sweetness rhymes.
