La Cineteca Italiana: Amarcord at Sewell Social Sciences
Federico Fellini's Amarcord dizzies with its humor and frantic pacing as much as it bursts with sentimentality. Looking back loosely on his own childhood in an Italian village during Mussolini's reign, the film sends adolescent protagonist Titta (Bruno Zanin) through a vivid, episodic gauntlet of garish sexual temptations, awkward confessions, fascist rallies, disastrous family dinners, and moments of historic witness. Fellini's memories somehow manage to be sweet and frank at once, thriving on a youthful ability to roll with the moment. Fellini is loose and spontaneous in telling all these stories, much more concerned with affectionately savoring a huge ensemble of characters.
