Lakeside Cinema: The Matrix at Memorial Union Terrace
Lakeside Cinema's summer journey through the '90s concludes with the Wachowski brothers' cyberpunk workout The Matrix, whose mega-styled action sequences and bleak urgency floored audiences back in 1999. While technical leaps like that iconic frozen-in-mid-kick shot make more of an impact than the actual plot (hacker Keanu Reeves vs. sinister computer lords), it's mostly executed with sleek elegance. The Matrix's slightly grimy look would end up rubbing off on a lot of the next decade's sci-fi and horror movies, most of which didn't back it up with two-plus hours of spoon-bending, slo-motion-bullet-dodging paranoia.
