Leo Kottke and Leon Redbone at Barrymore Theatre
Leon Redbone always seems to mosey out of some vague composite of America’s past and then to smoothly vanish back into it, stopping to bless the present with his jaunty compendium of American ragtime, blues, and Tin Pan Alley songs. He’s among the few performers who seem entirely confident not revealing much of themselves or updating their personas: His Panama hat, deadpan expression, sunglasses, and deep, melodious honk of a voice remain unchanged without seeming to age. Also rustically well preserved is his style on the acoustic guitar: a pleasant, scratchy sound that unfolds impressively in rag-style solos. Redbone shares the bill here with Leo Kottke, whose dizzyingly deft acoustic fingerpicking tends to create more layers of melody than seems possible from a lone guitarist.
