Local Band Wednesdays: Screamin' Cyn-Cyn And The Pons And The Takebacks at Memorial Union Terrace
This year's weekly series of local bands on the Terrace closes out in excellent, flamboyant fashion. Screamin' Cyn Cyn And The Pons put on consistently giddy sets of clever pop-punk, aided by thrift-store-glam getups and wacky showmanship on the part of lead singer Shane O'Neil and guitarist-singer Cynthia Burnson. Plus, tunes like "20 Percent Gay" and "Cat Waco" have turned out to be bizarrely sing-along-friendly despite their subject matter. The Takebacks, meanwhile, fashion some odd, scrappy hybrids of dub and nervous rhythm. Sometimes they play frantic punk-rock songs, and sometimes they play pretty straightforward, steamy reggae jams complete with lo-fi melodica and tape effects, but it's best when they try to do both at once.
