Lucero and Ha Ha Tonka at High Noon Saloon

Lucero isn't the first punk band to go country, but it's done it better than most. After more than a decade together, the Memphis band hasn’t changed much in personality: The group remains a hard-working, hard-touring bunch and frontman Ben Nichols a charming, (usually) heartbroken country-rock crooner. But, of course, no one who starts out as an alt-country band seems to stay there, and Lucero’s major-label debut, 1372 Overton Park (released last fall), proves that. Missouri's Ha Ha Tonka didn't take long to get its strengths across on 2007's Buckle In The Bible Belt, clocking in at just a half-hour. After that twangy blast of an introduction, it's understandable the band would want to slow down and build some suspense, which is what happens on the follow-up, Novel Sounds Of The Nouveau South. Not that Ha Ha Tonka stopped rocking, but songs like "The Outpouring" expand on the reflective side of its "foot-stompin' indie rock" songwriting.
