Madison World Music Festival: Thursday at Memorial Union Terrace
The annual Madison World Music Festival returns with plenty of momentum Thursday night, at least judging by the way it quickly and brightly hops across three different regions of the world during this kick-off evening. Brooklyn's Red Baraat Festival (6 p.m.) starts things off at the Terrace with a tough flank of percussion and brass that harnesses hard-charging Afrobeat alongside melodies inspired by Indian and gypsy music. Then it's off to Basque Country with Kepa Junkera (8:15), leading his band with the warm tones of an accordion known as the trikitixa. The four-day festival's hearty sampling of African music begins with Thursday's close-out set from Kusun Ensemble, melding traditional and modern strains of dance and music from Ghana.
