Mama Digdown's Brass Band at Corral Room
Madison's Mama Digdown’s Brass Band has long been a sure bet for a bit of the Big Easy in the cold Midwest, thanks to horn-fueled swing that sounds like it’s being piped in directly from New Orleans. The band's 2006 disc, Ascona, was recorded live at a jazz festival in Switzerland, and features both well-chosen classics (“I’ll Fly Away,” Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman”) and a couple of surprises, like Bobby Brown’s “Good Enough.” The band crams itself into the low-ceilinged shoebox of the Corral Room here to celebrate its new CD, We Make ‘Em Say Ooh, which keeps up the bold rhythms and spicy, funky horns on tune like "Mojito" and "Red Dress." (The cover charge also gets you a copy.)
