Matt Hires and Jason Castro at Memorial Union Rathskeller

Matt Hires rolled off the premature-adult-contempo assembly line with an endearing quality intact on 2009's Take Us To The Start. The young Floridian singer-songwriter's voice won't challenge any boundaries, but hasn't had all the expression sapped out of it, instead making room for a personable, approachable quality in a genre that tends to reward the generic. Hires uses it to sound both cuddly ("Honey, Let Me Sing You A Song") and world-weary ("You In The End"), and while it seems a little affected anyway, it's at least affected with a convincing dose of human warmth. He's joined here by Jason Castro, the dreadlocked fourth-place finisher from American Idol's sixth season.
