Melt-Banana, The United Sons Of Toil, and Dick The Bruiser at High Noon Saloon
Japan's Melt-Banana hasn't been merely freaking out since the early '90s: It's been building turbo-pop-punk songs from the stuff freak-outs are made of. The most maddening thing about Yasuko Onuki's thumbtack-spitting vocals, Ichirou Agata's squiggle-fucked guitar, and the jackhammering rhythm section is how tight and on-point a unit emerges from their collective whoop, boom, and squawk. Albums like 1996's Scratch Or Stitch and 2007's Bambi's Dilemma capture the Jesus Lizard-on-crank attack with all due ferocity, but the new Melt-Banana Lite Live: Ver. 0.0, showcases a version of the band that ditches the guitars in favor of samplers and synths. As live albums go, 1999's MXBX 1998: 13,000 Miles At Light Velocity offers a better prediction of what this show will be like: Getting suffocated by angry rainbows.
