Memoryhouse, Tiny Fireflies, and Land Of Vandals at High Noon Saloon

If you find yourself dozing off while listening to Ontario duo Memoryhouse, don’t be alarmed; that’s the point. Evan Abeele and Denise Nouvion play the type of music that gets into your head and haunts your dreams—totally in a good way, though. In its favorable review, Pitchfork described the music as “somber” and “ethereal dream-pop”—the highest of indie compliments. Nouvion’s drifting vocals intrigue rather than bore, and Abeele provides melodies distantly related to white noise. The duo released an EP, The Years, in early 2010 and then re-released it with a few new tracks. The band’s Subpop debut, The Slideshow Effect, stays true to drowsiness-suggesting title and populates itself with smooth, shimmering songs like “Walk With Me.”
