Dallas chanteuse Michelle Shocked fashions herself as quick-witted and not beneath appreciating a good pun in her lyrics—hence Karen Michelle Johnson's chosen stage name. Since 1986, her music has been fairly unpredictable but also comfortably rooted in the rock tradition. Where 2005'sMexican Standoff mixed Latin and Anglo music to mixed results and 2007's To Heaven U Ride got a bit preachy about the environment, her new Soul Of My Soul experiments with something new: directness. It's part of Shocked's effort to "jettison rage without losing the ability to feel strong feelings," according to her bio. Rather than cloud break-up song "Other People" with complicated metaphors or messy images, she simply says, "I believe we should see other people." As a result, this is her poppiest effort in recent memory.
