Moulin Rouge! at Union South - The Marquee
In many ways, Baz Luhrmann’s delirious musical pastiche Moulin Rouge is a sign that cinema has gone to the dogs, beaten down by hummingbird editing techniques, histrionic slapstick, and cheap pop-culture references. Yet the film exhilarates on its own terms, thanks to Luhrmann’s sparkling, plasticized universe, swooning performances by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, and a stylistic adventurousness that’s unusual for contemporary Hollywood. McGregor stars as a would-be Bohemian poet in 1899 Paris who enters the city’s infamous club and falls for Kidman, a ravishing courtesan. Then they sing. And sing. And sing.
