Mount Eerie, No Kids, and Tara Jane O'Neil at High Noon Saloon
Phil Elverum is Mount Eerie, not to be confused necessarily with his earlier project The Microphones whose last studio album was titled, yup, Mount Eerie. At first, after Elverum adopted the Eerie moniker, he insisted that both bands were separate endeavors and that Mount Eerie was to be his new focus. Which, at the outset, made good sense. Mount Eerie was a somewhat sparser sound, a less heavy-handed blend of The Microphones’ lo-fi oceanic rock and wandering folk-pop. But after a while even Elverum couldn’t wholly reject his former name and in late 2006/early 2007 released a couple of singles as (again) The Microphones. He got back on the Eerie train for this year’s Wind’s Poem, which—inspired by Elverum’s newfound affinity for black metal—is his densest and most immersive effort to date.
