Mountain Heart and The Hot Seats at High Noon Saloon
Georgia's Mountain Heart might strike some as a bit of a missing link in country music. The band fuses the shiny smoothness of pop-country with the fiddles and mandolins of traditional bluegrass, playing up the gospel spirituality common to both sides. On records like 2006's Wide Open, this sometimes means streamlining and simplifying the intricate picking that more traditional string-band fans love, but Mountain Heart's energetic live workouts take care of that problem, as showcased on the 2007 live album Road That Never Ends. Richmond, Va.'s The Hot Seats pay tribute to the past by making it look backward and silly, playing deftly to their bluegrass influences, then adding in the drunken goofery of jug bands and vaudeville comedians.
