National Beekeepers Society and The Honey Slides at Mickey's Tavern
Four local musicians who've already given Madison a lot of garage-rock bashings and/or melodic vintage-pop love-notes—in The Grizzlies, The Hussy, and The Midwest Beat—do yet more of that in The Honey Slides. Fortunately, singer-guitarist Matt Joyce and friends aren't just re-hashing the good work they've already done with their other bands on The Honey Slides' self-titled six-track EP. For the most part it's exactly the music you'd expect these people to make, but it doesn't get too stuck on one formula. Even for those already familiar, these tunes offer some mild surprises, like the rich, sad honky-tonk-meets-folk vocal harmonies of "What You'll Do" and the cranky guitar hook of "Witches For Money."
