The New Deal and DJ Rekha at Majestic Theatre
Toronto’s The New Deal straddles the line between dance music and the kind of jam-band improv that makes the group’s popularity in San Francisco none too surprising. Working with an organ-bass-drums lineup, The New Deal cycles through tight house grooves and crusty diversions into fusion-land. The group’s most recent studio album is 2003’s Gone Gone Gone—which includes vocal contributions from Feist and Martina Sorbara—but the stage usually proves a better home. Here, The New Deal shares the bill with New York's DJ Rekha, who's largely responsible for making Indian bhangra music an element of the American dance scene, and seems to visit Madison far more often than any other nationally recognized DJ.
