The New Standards at Restaurant Magnus
The New Standards' approach to covering pop tunes with jazz instrumentation isn't as whacked-out as that of fellow Minnesotans The Bad Plus, but in a way it does a lot more justice to the songs themselves. Setting "London Calling" and "Dark End Of The Street"—the band has a pretty cool, broad idea of what the last 50 years' "standards" are—amid the interplay of piano, bass, and vibraphone is risky, but singer-pianist Chan Poling and band adapt dynamically and affectionately from song to song, consistently setting the right moods and then stretching out boldly. Besides, how often do you get to hear songs like "All The Young Dudes" or The Replacements' "Androgynous" at a place like Restaurant Magnus?
