Noam Chomsky: "The Role Of The Radical Intellectual" at Orpheum Theatre
It can be difficult for dissidents to stay relevant for extended periods of time: Their championed causes either wither or change, or their voices become easy to tune out. Not so for Noam Chomsky. When UW-Madison’s Havens Center presents him with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to critical scholarship, it’s in no way a ginned-up honor. For nearly 50 years, Chomsky’s been one of the most vocal, respected, and divisive public intellectuals in the world, particularly when it comes to his scathing critiques of U.S. policies. A linguist by trade, Chomsky’s reach both in and outside his field is staggering, and he’ll mark the event by delivering a speech befitting his long shadow titled “The Role Of The Radical Intellectual.”
