Owl City, Lights (Canada), and Deas Vail at Majestic Theatre
Synth-pop songwriter Adam Young built up an impressively large online fan base without leaving his parents' basement in rural Owatonna, Minn., racking up more than 40 million plays on his MySpace page and a million iTunes downloads. In less than a year, he's gone from being an unsigned artist who had never played live to releasing his new third album, Ocean Eyes, with Universal and embarking on a world tour that includes China and Japan. It'll be interesting to see how he makes the transition: Young is still shy enough that he prefers to do email interviews rather than talk on the phone, and his naïve sweetness—the guy writes sugary, summery tunes about visiting the dentist, and lyrics like "I get a thousand hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs"—is disarmingly genuine. Can such cute puppy-eyed pop survive once it hits the outside world?
