Portugal. The Man, Hockey, and Drug Rug at Majestic Theatre
Irritating punctuation aside, Portugal. The Man remains fairly accessible with its organic and lively prog-pop, even as its discography seemingly grows by the minute. Each new EP and full-length builds upon an interest in soulful, ’60s-styled sing-alongs and epic free jazz. This year’s The Satanic Satanist and its acoustic counterpart, The Majestic Majesty, are poppier than past efforts, an MGMT-like foray into psychedelic folk-rock and croony, feel-good vocals. Opener Drug Rug sounds like most modern rock bands, but with the slightest hint of flower-power-era harmonies and electric guitar. The band's recent second LP, Paint The Fence Invisible, finds it steadily focused on the details of its sound—lots of major-to-minor chord progressions that sound great under the lo-fi production—and paint a portrait of a young group to watch.
