P.O.S., Dessa, Astronautalis, and F. Stokes at High Noon Saloon

With his 2009 record Never Better, P.O.S. moved into position as possibly the best MC to come out of the Twin Cities (watch out, Slug), and a major force in the thriving Midwest hip-hop scene. His first two records, Ipecac Neat and Audition, brought together his love of rap with his other job as guitarist and singer for punk outfit Building Better Bombs. Featuring cameos and production help from his colleagues in the Doomtree collective, Never Better again combines punchy beats with murky distortion, and the result is his best work yet. One of Never Better's most scathing, "America's fucked, y'all" verses comes courtesy of former Medida member Dessa Darling, who's ascended to Doomtree's highest branches spinning tales of jilted love and bittersweet reflections—as well as the occasional rapid-fire boom-bap track. Opener Astronautalis blends roots-rock, IDM, and hip-hop, yielding schizophrenic yet rewarding results.
