Real Estate, Alex Bleeker And The Freaks, and Bird Names at Memorial Union Rathskeller
One of the more pleasing trends in supposedly trendy music this year has been the rise of lo-fi artists who avoid the sonically debased fuzz of Times New Viking, and instead submerge their pop in more dynamic, warm swirls of reverb and open space. Like their Madison-based pal Julian Lynch, New Jersey's Real Estate takes advantage of the breathing room this approach offers for both musicianship and emotional impact. The self-titled LP due out this month was unfortunately slapped with the asinine "chillwave" genre tag (which began as a joke anyway), but its songs search around as much as they soothe, using glittery guitars and spacey noise in the service of melody instead of just drowning it in sloppy texture.
