Real To Reel Cinema: Billy The Kid at Fredric March Play Circle
In the 2007 documentary Billy The Kid, director Jennifer Venditti zips herself into the world of a Maine teenager who regards himself as "just different in the mind." The sweet, hyper-eyed Billy isn't necessarily nuts, but helplessly abuzz with imagination, curiosity, rock 'n' roll, puppy love, and moral convictions. Venditti first discovered Billy as a casting director on a fiction film and is clearly drawn to his non-clique-based take on nonconformity. Rather than a simple portrait of a teenage weirdo, Billy The Kid digs up plenty that's universal and hopeful about its protagonist, not blinded by his romantic outsider mindset but full of admiration for it anyway.
