Real To Reel Film Series: Beautiful Losers at Fredric March Play Circle
Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard's 2008 documentary Beautiful Losers pulls together a widespread generation of painters, taggers, skateboarders, filmmakers, and other creatives who broke colorfully away from the art establishment in the '90s. It also charts how many of them, including Harmony Korine (who wrote Kids and directed Gummo), have permeated not only the underground but an impressive chunk of popular culture. The film's packed with visual stimulation, capturing artists in the act as they establish their own galleries, or at least turn the sides of buildings into their galleries, finding sharp and insightful new ways to channel the wonders of art, especially painter Jo Jackson and photographer Deanna Templeton.
