The impossibly sweet duo of Green Bay native Sam Brooker and Ghana-born, Tennessee-raised Ruby Amanfu stirs a half-and-half mixture of soul and folk into coffeehouse rock on last year’s The Here And The Now. Though uniformly soft and pleasant, the overwhelming drowsiness of songs like the title track and “Heaven’s My Home” makes the precious lyrics a bit tougher to swallow, but the sparse arrangements do contrast nicely with the swelling, mournful strings slathered over album highlights like “What Do I Do Now.” Although it's Amanfu’s breathy coo that most immediately captures the ear, it's on their effortless harmonies that Sam And Ruby truly rise.
