Sleepy Sun, Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound, and Frail By Design at The Frequency
Getting sludgy stoner rock, mellow Americana, and whispering psych-folk to sit still and hold hands is harder than it looks, which is why so many throwback bands choose only one of those retro sounds to mine. But somehow California’s Sleepy Sun makes it seem effortless, laying down swirling tracers of epic acid-rock rumble and pastoral acoustic reflection with equal aplomb, then subverting all expectations of those bored with the “psychedelic revival” with a piano-driven, Neil Young-esque ballad like “Lord.” Its debut, Embrace, slips from blissed-out haze to threatening blues fuzz to heartbreaking harmonies often within the same song, making for one of the most attention-grabbing releases from a movement primarily known for staring at its shoes.
