Smoking Popes and Blackwell Beauties at Memorial Union Rathskeller

Chicago punk-poppers Smoking Popes broke up in 1998, then sprang back in remarkably well-preserved form in 2005: The 2006 live reunion album At Metro thrived on an energetically performed best-of setlist and leader Josh Caterer's melodramatic but not strained vocals. Flowery melodies spread over raucous, jolly guitar chords continued to prove a simple but lasting recipe on 2008's Stay Down, especially considering the kind reception the Popes have gotten these past few years (and respect from a couple of generations of contemporaries). They play here ahead of a 2010 odds-and-ends release, It's Been A Long Day
