Sugar Maple Traditional Music Festival: Saturday at Lake Farm County Park
Sugar Maple's second day certainly puts a few unusual spins on its "traditional" billing. Saturday features two sets from progressive-bluegrass banjo player J.D. Crowe, whose 1975 album J.D. Crowe And The New South pushed the genre beyond its old-timey borders, boasting impeccable musicianship but also a setlist that combined traditional songs with selections from Gordon Lightfoot and other songwriters from modern folk and rock music. The younger trio Shotgun Party sasses up its Western-swing sound with the mischievous, flirtatious vocals of Jenny Parrott, and the always-awesome Robbie Fulks plays a set here with fellow Chicago singer-songwriter Nora O'Connor. Madison native Joel Paterson comes back up from Chicago once again to share his six-string and steel-guitar skills, and there's even "cowboy songs and rope tricks" on offer from "harmony yodeling champions" KG And The Ranger.
