Sunset Rubdown and Tune-Yards at High Noon Saloon
It used to be easier to call Sunset Rubdown a side project—something that frontman Spencer Krug fooled around on when he wasn’t touring the world with Wolf Parade or collaborating with Destroyer and Frog Eyes. Although Krug’s voice—a howl that teeters on the edge of desperation—is too singular to avoid mentions of Wolf Parade, his new album Dragonslayer’s gorgeous melodies and intricate song structures might make Sunset Rubdown the ultimate point of reference for Krug's work. Opener tUnE-yArDs' debut album Bird-Brains at once proves and subverts everything that's ever been said about "lo-fi" artists: Its cheap, computer-recorded quality inevitably becomes a big part of its dynamic, but solo musician Merrill Garbus' bumping, wailing collisions of folk and hip-hop would sound commandingly nutty—and just as friendly—even in the slickest Pro Tools mix.
