Surreal Silent Film Friday: Un Chien Andalou

Fri Aug 14
10:30 pm,
Surreal Silent Film Friday: Un Chien Andalou at Mickey's Tavern
With all of UW's nifty free cinema programs on hiatus until the semester starts back again, it's nice to have the occasional one-off bit of filmic fun. (Also see Wednesday's Visioneers screening at the Majestic.) Here, local multi-instrumentalist Biff Blumfumgagne's flirtatious ventures into live-crafted silent-movie soundtracks continues with Un Chien Andalou, director Luis Buñuel's 1929 collaboration with the great surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Though it's only 16 minutes long, the film's freesociative patchwork of imagery should prove tough to accompany. (This is, after all, the movie that inspired the Pixies' "slicin' up eyeballs" lyrics in "Debaser.") Blumfumgagne will fill out the evening with whatever unusual cartoon reels he's managed to track down on eBay lately.
